"Ms. Kohtz was a conscientious and passionate advocate for her client's cause."
- a U.S. Federal Court Judge, Southern District of New York, April 2016
I take pride in the attentive, personal service and formidable advocacy that I offer to each client.
I purposefully maintain a reasonable case load so that I am able to work with every client directly. I will not take your case if I cannot handle it myself. You will not need to go through an associate or paralegal to communicate with me. I advise every client regarding all decisions as every one of these decisions may shape the course of an action. I am always available to answer your questions or concerns.
The driving force for my services is vigorously advocating your interest and achieving the best possible outcome for you, not convenience or fear. Experience has taught me that carrying a big stick is the best way to deter a conflict. Negotiations are most successful when a client has no fear of litigating the case or when a client has obtained favorable rulings in preliminary proceedings in court. The ability to litigate and to try cases skillfully is essential to an attorney's ability to resolve a matter favorably through negotiations. The common threat of "going to trial," which clients and many lawyers fear, often drives clients to agree to unfavorable settlements. Such threat means nothing to me. If litigation is inevitable, I will advocate your interest vigorously in court. I have been recognized for my successes on civil advocacy. I was selected by the New York Law Journal readers as one of New York's Best Judicial Enforcement Providers in 2012, 2013 and 2016.
Retain My Service
If you are interested in my service, please contact me directly, by phone, by email, or by filling out the contact form. I will be happy to answer any general questions that you have and to provide a preliminary case evaluation.
After the preliminary case evaluation, if we agree that I should handle your case, I will send you information about retaining my services and fees. We will proceed upon completion of the required paperwork and fee arrangements.
It is important that we both understand fully your position and perspective before you retain my service. If, needed, I will send you information to schedule a formal consultation by telephone, video conference, or in person. I will request information and documentation to review in preparation for your consultation. During the consultation, I will identify and elucidate the legal issues, explore your options, and offer strategies for your potential or ongoing case. Providing complete and accurate information will be important to the success of the consultation. After the consultation, you may choose to retain my services, either as the lead attorney for your case or as an advisor to the attorneys for your ongoing legal matter.
The consultation fee will be charged based on my hourly rate and the number of hours that you may request.
The costs of legal services in the United States, particularly in New York City, can become very burdensome even for very affluent individuals and families. It is important you receive a cost-effective service. So I am always completely transparent with the fees and costs.
I discuss my fees and how you will pay them from the start. In this way both you and I make clear our expectations. The amount of time I spend on your case may be affected by many factors, such as the approach taken by the other side. However, whenever possible I will provide you with an estimate of the fees, charges and other expenses which you may incur for each stage of work. In that way you can be clear about how much your case is likely to cost.
I will let you know if at any stage the estimate I have given you is likely to be exceeded because more work was required than was expected at the outset of your case. You can also set a cost limit beyond which I must obtain your authority to continue.
My services are typically charged on a time basis at an hourly rate. Fixed fee arrangements are available in uncontested divorce cases, immigration and transactional matters. My hourly rate billing is charged precisely (by 6 minutes intervals), and I only charge when I am actively and exclusively working on your case. I strive to keep the costs down, and believe in a no non-sense approach to legal work. I bill my clients monthly. This means that you always know the amount which you have incurred, how that time has been incurred and what, if anything, is outstanding.
You also can help to manage legal costs. I highly recommend a pamphlet written by the New York State Bar Association, entitled "You and Your Lawyer," which is very informative as to how to manage your legal affairs and costs.
